FRIDAY TIPS
VIGSY'S
CLUB TIP: Electric Soul Londinium at The Royal Inn on The Park
The Inn is just off the larger bit of Victoria Park and was
a pretty average pub when I lived around the corner, but it
has reinvented itself a bit since it started serving Pimms to
the trendies, and as a result they are putting on a few events.
And this weekend's event should be awesome. The Electric Soul
Crew are bringing down their team from Manchester and they have
a peach of a line up: Compost records giant Rainer Truby, the
Unabombers, Benji B (Gilles Peterson's sidekick) and my old
mate Raf Rundell from Accidental Records - he was the Rocketscience
Media legend. Showcasing leftfield nu-soul, jazz, funk, disco,
boogie and, of course, dope house (and whatever takes their
fancy) it should be top, though sadly it only runs till midnight.
If you can't get down check Electric Soul Crew's mix album release
at the end of May. It's very good.
Sunday
1 May, The Royal Inn on The Park, 111 Lauriston Road London
E9, 6pm-Midnight, £10 advance, more at http://www.electriks.co.uk
, press info from Pias.
CHRIS'
CLUB TIP: Kill All Hippies at Canvas
Three quick things to say about the ever legendary Kill All
Hippies. Firstly, the latest edition is tonight and (as that
classified ad above so charmingly informs you) you've got Whitey,
The Paddingtons, Moco and Gliss doing the live thing, with Eddy
TM, Jeff Automatic, Syrinx and the NME DJs on the decks. Secondly,
the live sets from Whitey, Moco and Gliss will be recorded on
the night and then available for download via the wonderful
http://www.tunetribe.com from Sunday evening at 6pm (so if you
can't make it in the real world, check it out in the virtual
world). Thirdly and finally, there's some exciting news regarding
CMU's favourite London rock night - more on that on Tuesday.
Hurrah.
Friday
29 Apr, Canvas, York Way, N1, 8.30pm till very late, £5
(£3 if you guest list yourself in advance at http://www.leylinepromotions.com/killallhippies),

ENCOMPASS
THIS WEEKEND
The Encompass music conference will take over the trendy East
side of London from tonight with a packed programme of seminars,
talks, debates and damn fine music. As previously reported,
Encompass aims to bring together everyone working in dance and
electronic music, reviewing the state of play in the industry,
giving those embarking on their music careers a helping hand,
and showcasing some of the best in the business. The full weekend
line up is published at the bottom of today's CMU Daily - for
details on how to get yourself some last minute tickets check
out http://www.encompass-london.com - you can buy weekend tickets,
day tickets or just a night pass.
Music
wise, CMU will be trying its utmost to check out, among others
of course, Jazzanova, Tom Middleton, Touché, 2020Soundsystem,
Krafty Kuts, Skool Of Thought, Soul of Man, Slyde, Drumattic
Twins, The Breakfastaz, The Ragga Twins, Justin Robertson, Eclectic
Method and Vitalic.
CMU
spoke to Vitalic about what we could expect from his Encompass
set. "It will be a one hour live, dance oriented set, mixing
older tracks with new ones and some unreleased tracks only designed
for the live. Generally, my live is a bit raw and brutal. On
the stage, you'll see just my equipment and myself... no laser
light show so far." And what tips will Vitalic be offering
to any newcomers at the conference? "Not to use just simple
all in one machines. A good way to have a musical personality
is not to use the same equipment that everybody has. And also
not to systematically follow the advice of other people".
Another
Encompass event definitely worth checking out is the Saturday
night bit at Herbal where Novamute and Electronation will join
forces. From the Novamute label you will get Speedy J, Cristian
Vogel and the excellent T Raumschmiere, while Terry Toner and
Herr Arter will represent Electronation.

REMIX
AND FLOMOTION GO LIVE AT ICA THIS SUNDAY
Talking of great events taking place this weekend, here's another
one. Xfm's Remix and Flomotion shows will be broadcasting live
from the ICA this Sunday night, all courtesy of Tunetribe. Eddy
TM and Nick Luscombe will be Djing of course, plus there'll
be a stack of great acts playing live - Husky Rescue, Break
Reform, AmillionSons and Flatpack. All takes place from 7pm
till midnight at the ICA - tickets are £10, or £8
for ICA members and students. An obviously, given that it's
a live broadcast, you'll be able to hear it all on Xfm (104.9FM
in London, Sky Digital, on the web etc etc etc).

IT'S
THE VULTURE AIDES TO BLAME: JACKO TRIAL UPDATE
Very quick Jacko trial update today. And presumably the singer's
lawyers are glad they were unsuccessful in their bid to stop
the prosecution from calling Jackson's former-wife, Debbie Rowe,
to the witness stand because, rather than being the bitter ex
bitching about how she was blackmailed into recording a video
message in support of Jacko, she spoke very highly of her former
husband, and denied she had been forced to saying nice things
about him on tape.
Although
she admitted that she lied a bit about Jackson's parenting skills
in the tape that was recorded as part of Jacko's attempts to
overcome the fallout of the Martin Bashir documentary, she remained
positive about the singer, repeating to the court what she had
said in that video: "He's generous to a fault, giving and
kind. A great father, great with kids... a brilliant businessman."
Rowe
blamed much of her ex-husband's woes on his aides who, she claims,
are "vultures" concerned mainly with exploiting the
star for their own commercial advantage.
Rowe
is likely to be one of the last witnesses called by the prosecution
- with the defence's case expected to kick off anytime now.
--------------------------------------------------
SANTANA
SUED BY FORMER EMPLOYEE OVER GURU-LED SACKING
A former employee of Carlos Santana is suing the guitarist and
his wife over on the grounds of unfair dismissal - he claims
he was fired for not being "closer to God". Bruce
Kuhlman began working for Santana as a personal assistant in
1988, eventually moving up to run the musician's licensing division
River Of Colours.
Kuhlman
claims that he was sacked at the instigation of Dr Dan, a spiritual
guru who is guiding Santana and his wife. He alleges that he
was subjected to a "calibration" test by Dr Dan, and
that the guru reported that he was "too old to be enlightened"
and "that the more enlightened a person was, the closer
to God he was and the better employee he was". He also
says that Carlos' wife, Deborah Santana, constantly slurred
male employees, favouring female employees that had been "calibrated"
by Dr Dan. Kuhlman says he was dismissed from his job after
missing a meeting with Dr Dan
Kuhlman
is suing for $100,000. Santana's lawyers are yet to comment
on the legal action.

SINGLE
REVIEW: Antony And The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone (Rough
Trade)
While Antony And The Johnsons may sound like they're a shambolic
Rancid cover band whose idea of fun is spitting into each other's
mouths, this really couldn't be much further from the truth.
The lead single from the much-praised second album 'I Am A Bird
Now' is a piano ballad warbled by a man whose voice is so brazenly
nasal, you begin to wonder if he doesn't actually have a huge
nose instead of a mouth. 'Hope There's Someone' sees Antony
(for it is he) navigating the vocal boundary between very high,
falsetto and really fucking high. Then halfway through, the
track turns into something approaching Beethoven's Waldstein
sonata with Antony wailing over the top like some Enya-loving
banshee. Never less than intriguing, and beautiful too, if you
can get your head around that singing voice. WP

AMEN
POSTPONE UK TOUR
American punk band Amen have been forced to postpone their UK
tour, due to begin on 7 May due to the ill heath of one of its
members. Vocalist Casey Chaos was rushed to hospital last week
for an emergency operation after he suffered from internal bleeding
as a result of multiple ruptured hernias. Euuch. Anyway, the
band are hoping to reschedule the UK dates later in the summer.
Tickets for the cancelled shows will be valid for the new dates.

1XTRA
ANNOUNCE DJ BATTLES
1Xtra has announced details of its UKG DJ Battle Royale competition.
The contest will see emerging names on the UK Garage/Grime scene
battling it out over the airwaves in a series of heats, to be
broadcast on the M1X show every Friday night over the month
of May. Four DJs will take part in each heat, each providing
a ten minute mix to compete for a place in the Grand Final on
30 May. After the M1X show comes off-air, the mixes will go
online, listeners will vote for a week, and the winner of each
heat will be announced on the following week's M1X show. The
programmes will also be simulcast on the '1Xtra Presents' slot
on Radio 1
The
overall winner will be announced on the M1X show on Friday 3
Jun. Whoever wins the contest will get to host the Xtra Talent
slot for a month as well as doing a mix on Richie Vibe Vee's
show, and will also receive a pair of Pioneer CDJs plus mixer
and case.

WAL-MART
ADD CD BURN SERVICE TO DOWNLOAD PLATFORM
US supermarket giant Wal-Mart has added a new service to its
music download platform which will spare their customers from
the hassle of, erm, downloading anything.
With
the new service Wal-Mart will let customers pick up to 20 tracks
from their 500,000 track catalogue and then burn them onto a
CD for them. The CD, complete with the customer's chosen title
and artwork, is then mailed out to them. An initial three track
CD will cost $4.62, with each additional track costing 88 cents,
the same price Wal-Mart charge for downloads.
Wal-Mart's
download platform hasn't made a big impact, despite their cost
cutting approach, but some reckon the new service might make
a difference - introducing Wal-Mart's generally IT-phobic customer
base to the idea of buying music online, albeit with a mail-order
CD in the first instance. WalMart's Kevin Swint told reporters:
"The service is readily accessible to customers without
a CD burner or who prefer not to download music".

THE
REAL TUESDAY WELD LIVE SOUNDTRACK PERFORMANCE
The Real Tuesday Weld, aka Stephen Coates will perform a live
soundtrack to surrealist film 'Dreams That Money Can Buy' at
the National Film Theatre this weekend. The 1946 Film, directed
by Hans Richter will be screened with the live accompaniment
on Saturday at 8.45pm. The Real Tuesday Weld release a new single
'[Still] Terminally Ambivalent Over You' in May.

FUTUREHEADS
ON NEW SONGS
The Futureheads have spoken to NME.com about writing their new
album. The band are on tour for most of the rest of the year,
but guitarist Barry Hyde has revealed that he's written a new
song 'Areas' which has already been incorporated into their
set, and that they expect to add more songs as they write them.
"I've been writing a few songs about crime," he said
"What I'm trying to do is write songs about morbid things
but make them really joyous on the ear. 'Areas' is about going
to places and ending up in the wrong side of town, places that
have just let to rot."
The
band also say that they are looking forward to Radio 1's Big
Weekend because it's in their hometown of Sunderland: "It's
great for us, but it's also great for Sunderland. Generally
bands completely skip the north east of England so to have something
like this in Sunderland is incredible," he declared, "We've
got 200 people coming down. People we went to school with, plus
the whole family - even grandmothers!"

LOU
REED TO RELEASE LIVE DVD
Lou Reed is to release a DVD of a live performance that took
place at last year's Benicassim festival in Valencia. The DVD,
to be called 'Spanish Fly: Live In Spain' will be out on 6 Jun
and comprises eleven songs which include versions of Velvet
Underground classics 'Sweet Jane' and 'Venus In Furs,' as well
solo track 'Walk On The Wild Side.'

LABOUR
TELL CREATIVE INDUSTRY IT'S ALL COPYRIGHT, COPYRIGHT, COPYRIGHT
The Labour Party are all set to support the creative industries
should they get a third term in government - and we all believe
everything the Labour Party said, so that's great. Commitments
to the creative sector outlined in the Party's Business Manifesto,
published yesterday, include:
- Tougher action to tackle the estimated £4.5 billion
a year in intellectual property infringement and theft with
new powers (to trading standards officers) to increase fines
and recoup losses from copyright pirates and offenders.
-
Better access to evidence for victims of fraud and theft - so
that enforcement agencies collaborate with the creators and
owners of intellectual property to crack down on piracy and
illegal copying.
-
Reform the Patent Office to create a stronger focus on protecting
British business dealing with IP and in bringing new ideas to
market, including creative industry placements for Patent Office
officials.
-
Extend digital skills by ensuring that by the end of 2006 all
schools can offer every pupil access to computers at home.
-
Work with the Live Music Forum (chaired by Feargal Sharkey)
to encourage live music performances, and with the music industry
in the Music Business Forum to help the British music industry
maintain its competitiveness in global markets.
Announcing
those pledges, Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt
said: "The creative industries make a huge contribution
to our economy, as well as to our social and cultural life.
They produce a higher proportion of our total wealth - 8% of
GDP - than anywhere else in the world. The £11.4 billion
they contribute to our balance of trade is well ahead of the
construction industry, insurance and pensions, and twice that
of the pharmaceutical sector. That is why we need to modernise
our copyright and intellectual property regimes, so that in
a digital age, creators, entrepreneurs and creative industries
can invest in ideas and talent knowing that they will get a
proper reward for their investment."
Speaking
for the music business, EMI boss Eric Nicoli welcomed much of
what the Labour Party is pledging, especially the commitments
to tightening up copyright and IP law. He told reporters: "Our
creative economy is hugely important to Britain - worth almost
£11.5 billion to our balance of trade. With the publication
of its Business Manifesto, Labour has demonstrated that it has
a serious policy agenda for the United Kingdom's creative industries.
Labour has committed itself to a stronger intellectual property
regime and is taking positive steps to ensure that the UK remains
a great place for creative and innovative businesses to operate".
Impressive
reading of course, but if only they'd put in a line about providing
government support to independent media companies providing
free online information resources to the music business the
election would be in the bag.

FIVE
PLAN CHANNEL FOR THE LADIES
Channel Five is planning on launching a digital TV channel for
women, because there's just nothing on TV at the moment for
women. The channel is reportedly part of the network's multi-channel
ambitions, and would essentially take on Flextech's female-focused
LivingTV. Word is the channel for girls idea is currently getting
more support in Five than an earlier plan to launch a kids channel
around the network's Milkshake strand, though a spokesman for
Five stresses that a number of options are still being considered.
--------------------------------------------------
UNIVERSAL
REPORT GOOD FINANCIALS
The Universal Music Group has reported encouraging financials
for the first quarter. The major record company's global revenues
were 1.038 billion euros ($1.338 billion), representing a 14%
jump on the comparable 2004 period. That growth came despite
a continued perception of there being a downward trend in the
music sector. Certainly Universal seem to have increased their
market share, thanks to strong releases from the likes of 50
Cent, Jack Johnson, 3 Doors Down, Mariah Carey and The Game.
The
group also benefited from a marked increase in income from the
digital music space. Download sales now account for 4% of the
group's revenues, and the major has a 25% share of the digital
music market place. Jean-Bernard Levy, chairman of Universal's
parent company Vivendi, told investors he saw the digital domain
as an ongoing area of growth for the major, with digital sales
likely to account for 20% of total revenues in a few years time.
Perhaps
unsurprisingly given the financial successes, Levy also reportedly
reaffirmed his commitment to keep the Universal Music Group
within his company. Vivendi had to sell of its other Universal
entertainment businesses, of course, in a bid to recover from
its acute financial hardships a few years back.

ALBUM
REVIEW: JDS - The Adventures Of The Purple Funky Monkey (TCR)
JDS's recent releases have had the cream of electro-world chomping
at the bit for a while now - The Chemical Bros., Fatboy Slim,
Krafty Kuts, Meat Katie and Laurent Garnier, to literally name
but a few, so it comes as no surprise to see a full album emerge
from the skilled UK duo, also known as Darren Peace and Julian
Napolitano. Thursday Club Recordings, the shrewd label from
breaks star Rennie Pilgrem, plays host, and further proves its
prowess as a bona fide underground hit-making machine. 'The
Adventures Of The Purple Funky Monkey' is JDS purely doing what
they do best; producing an LP of intense, hyper singles aimed
directly at the dance floor, save the two or three more down
tempo tracks. This makes for a quite a heavy album that's really
intended for the real breaks fanatics and personally I found
it all a little much. That's not to say that there aren't some
real corkers on it; the title track is a relentless Liam Howlett
electro-stormer, and one of the best breaks/house crossover
track you'll hear. 'This Is Kalifonia' is an old skool hip-hop
inspired, summery, instrumental funker, and 'Blackout' proves
why it's The Chems' favourite, as it can only be described as
Josh Wink on acid. Beware. OG

EPM
LAUNCH DIGITAL MUSIC SERVICE
Music promotions company ePM has launched a new division called
ePM online designed to help artists and labels in the dance
and electronica genres to make the most out of the digital music
domain. ePM online is basically a digital distribution company,
helping participating artists to get their music stocked by
the likes of iTunes, Sony Connect, Napster, DJ Download and
a host of other download platforms.
The
company's Oliver Way told CMU: "With the expanding possibilities
of downloadable music we felt it was time for electronic based
labels to be represented within this new area of the music industry".
With fifty labels already on board, Oliver will be bigging up
the new service when he takes part in the discussion panel 'Digital
Music: Retail and Distribution' at Encompass this weekend (Saturday
at 3pm). More info on ePM Online at http://www.epm-musiconline.com

BUSH
SIGNS NEW COPYRIGHT VIOLATION PENALTIES INTO US LAW
President Bush has signed and therefore formally approved that
previously reported US bill that will impose considerable penalties
on anyone found illegally distributing content online prior
to its official release.
The
Family Entertainment and Copyright Act includes a number of
measures to extend the criminal law covering copyright infringement,
most for the benefit of the movie industry. However the new
laws have also been welcomed by the music business because they
should help the Recording Industry Association of America in
their fight against illegal file sharing and downloading - a
fight which, despite initial successes, has been hindered somewhat
more recently by a reluctance in the courts to interpret existing
copyright law as the record labels' lawyers would wish. The
fact that anyone who illegally shares music online prior to
its official release could face both fines and jail time should
provide the kind of tougher deterrent the record industry has
been looking for. It remains to be seen how the law works in
practice, and whether similar measures are adopted elsewhere
around the world.
--------------------------------------------------
FRENCH
COURTS NOT IMPRESSED WITH DVD PIRACY PROTECTION SOFTWARE
So one up for the copyright enforcers in the states, but one
down (?) in France. The Court Of Appeals in Paris has ordered
that the DVD release of Mulholland Drive must be removed from
the shops forthwith because the copy-protection software on
it violates consumer's privacy rights. That decision follows
legal action launched by a French guy who said it was his right
to make a VHS copy of a DVD he had bought providing said copy
was for private use. The aforementioned copy-protection software
prevented him from doing this.
The
court's decision could have interesting ramifications for both
the film and music industries in France. One consumer rights
expert there reckons the ruling means 80% of DVD releases in
the country are now equipped with illegal mechanisms, and there
is a very strong argument that some of that dodgy PC-killing
piracy proof software used on many CD releases these days is
illegal for the same reasons. It will be interesting to see
how far the ruling extends, and whether it will affect other
European territories.

LOOT
LAUNCH DOWNLOAD PLATFORM
Another day, another download platform. London classified newspaper
Loot is launching its own download platform offering tracks
from the bargain rate of 29 pence. Powered by London based download
company Wippit, the new service hopes to benefit from the 635,662
unique users the Loot classifieds website enjoys every month.
Whether they'll be a section selling second hand MP3s were not
sure.

ALBUM
REVIEW: Tom McRae - All Maps Welcome (Sony BMG)
Tom McRae arrived on the music scene back in 2000, when his
debut self-titled album scored a Mercury nomination and extensive
critical praise. Yet despite this, he never quite made the crossover
into the mainstream. His second album, 'Just Like Blood' spawned
two top thirty singles and received similar adulation. It's
quite easy to explain why he remains a peripheral figure. There's
nothing wrong his with song writing; he's an incredibly articulate
and gifted writer. There isn't a mass audience for his brutally
honest and corrosive prose, set to bleak and minimal backgrounds.
Perhaps as a shot at commercial success, or possibly as a logical
extension of his career path, McRae lightens the mood a little
on this release. The lyrics may remain as angry and cathartic
as ever, but the production on this record seems more open and
expansive; the rough edges that defined his earlier work have
been smoothed, and McRae sounds the better for it. His vocals
have always been frail and imperfect, yet this suits the more
radiant and melodic sounds on the record. The likes of 'Packing
For The Crash' and 'The Girl Who Falls Downstairs' positively
glow once they burst into life, even if the subject matter is
at odds with this. By his own admission, McRae wanted to write
love songs that were personal to him, and he's more than accomplished
at doing so. The second half of the album somewhat retreats
into the familiar territory of his first two records; more low
key and modest sounding, but the album never really feels disjointed.
McRae shouldn't feel anxious about aiming for the mainstream;
there's nothing wrong with this at all, as long as it doesn't
detract from what made him such a feted artist in the first
place. McRae has delivered a more than satisfying record; whether
it will enlarge his fan base and appeal, I cannot say, but existing
fans will surely be pleased. McRae may never reach the audience
the likes of Damian Rice can, but anyone with fully functioning
senses can tell the difference. KW

ABDUL
HURT BY DRUG ACCUSATIONS
Paula Abdul has been accused of being a druggie - but only by
people posting to the American Idol message boards. She said:
"I started to read the show's message boards and saw one
of them had to do with me seeming weird. One said I was on drugs.
It was so hideous and mean." Abdul has been the subject
of much speculation about behind the scenes activity, following
those previously reported allegations that she had become sexually
involved more than one Idol contestant.
The
singer has also spoken publicly about the crippling pain that
ruined her pop career and turned her into a hobbling recluse,
saying "Drugs? I'm not on anything now and people accuse
me of being on drugs. If only people knew what I've gone through
with pain and pills'

SKINNER
DATES STARR'S GRANDDAUGHTER
According to The Sun. Mike Skinner is dating Ringo Starr's teenage
granddaughter Tatia Starkey, who is a member of British erotic
dancing troupe the Narni Shakers.
A
'friend' told the tabloid: "He's been boasting about how
filthy she is. It's safe to say it's a pretty physical relationship.
They've met up for a few dates and they are having a lot of
phone text. He won't say if there is a long-term future. But
the pair of them are smitten at the moment."

STEFANI'S
STING WOE
Gwen Stefani says that she was disappointed by a meeting with
her idol Sting, back when she was a "fat and puberty-stricken"
teenager.
She
said: "My dad was like: 'Ask him for his autograph,' so
I did, and Sting was really mean. But I loved him. When I met
Sting years later, I told him that story, and he was like: 'Oh
man, I was such a dick back then.' But he's such a great guy."

USHER
ASKED FOR AUTOGRAPH IN TOILET
According to contacmusic.com, Usher has discovered that even
the smallest room is not safe from autograph hunters, and revealed
his shock at being asked for his signature whilst in the process
of relieving himself.
The
singer said: "I'm in a stall and this guy is on the telephone
and I can hear his conversation. He's talking to his sister
saying, 'He's in the stall right next to me... I can't right
now. You know what, I'll call you back. Don't worry about it,
I got it.' And then a few seconds later, a little piece of paper
slides under. He says, 'Yo, man, let me get your autograph,
man!'"
