TOP BIT RECOMMENDED
Yes, it's time methinks for another reminder of the next rather exciting edition of the CMU Recommended Insomniacs Ball, which will once again take over the seOne club underneath London Bridge station, this time on 29 Sep.
Already on the bill are EdBanger stalwarts Uffie + Feadz and the irrepressible SebastiAn, giving things a little bit of a French feel, though there'll be plenty of home grown talent too, in particular the buzzy Pull Tiger Tail, the rather good We Smoke Fags, Dead Disco, These New Puritans, Ox Eagle Lion Man, Goldie Locks, Nic Nell, Punks Jump Up and Matty White Heat. In fact, in total there will be over seventeen bands playing the three rooms of the Ball, plus a stack of great DJs on top of that.
Given its name, obviously this all happens over night. Doors will open at 9.30pm and the proceedings will run all the way through to 6am the next day. And did I mention all this costs just a tenner?
Tickets are available from http://www.ticketweb.co.uk, there's more info at http://www.myspace.com/insomniacsball, and you press types can get all you need press wise from nick@10xbetter.com. And needless to say, look out for more line up info here in the CMU Daily, just as soon as it's confirmed.
PS: Don't forget it's the final ever CMU Recommended Remix Night at Cargo this Friday, as all things Remix prepare, instead, to go national. The last night will be extra special, with both Young Punx and Slyde live, plus on the decks will be your host Eddy TM and special guest Tom Findlay of Groove Armada. It's this Friday, 21 Sep, from 9pm to 3am. Tickets a tenner on the door, advance tickets from http://www.ticketweb.co.uk, or guest list yourself to get in for eight quid at http://www.leylinepromotions.com/theremix

IPHONE COMING TO UK IN NOVEMBER VIA 02
As expected, Apple's iPhone will arrive in the UK via the O2 network. The much hyped iPod/mobile hybrid will be available via O2 from 9 Nov for £269. Announcing the O2 partnership, Apple chief Steve Jobs told reporters: "We are coming to the UK and wanted to pick the best carrier, and that is O2". So now you know.

ERA WELCOME NEW MEGASTORE OWNERSHIP
The UK's Entertainment Retailers Association yesterday welcomed the management buyout at the Virgin Megastore which, as previously reported, will see the high street music retailer rebrand as Zavvi and bring to an end the Virgin Group, and Richard Branson's, 37 year association with the music business.
The trade body for entertainment retailers said the deal was a "welcome vote of confidence in the music retail sector", with ERA chief Paul Quirk telling reporters: "This is no surprise. Branson has been moving away from his roots in music for years. But it is extremely good news that the management team will now be able to move the business forward. The fact that the management has been able to secure funding for this deal shows the robust prospects for entertainment retail. The computer games and DVD markets are buoyant and even in music, despite misguided predictions that somehow record stores are finished, 90% of sales are still on physical formats".
Zavvi will be the second biggest 'specialist entertainment chain' in the UK. Quirk concluded: "Specialists are the heart and soul of the music retail business. We are delighted to welcome Zavvi to the ranks of the UK's entertainment retailers".

BRONFMAN UPBEAT AT WEB CONFERENCE
Warner Music chief Edgar Bronfman Jr was reportedly upbeat at a webby conference in New York this week. According to Digital Music News, while Bronfman admitted that "almost every core operating principle in the recorded music business has been shaken or challenged" in the internet age, he said that the opportunities online and mobile offered the music industry were significant. He told the Convergence 2.0 conference: "The growth in the sale of music on the internet and via mobile devices has been awesome, and there is a lot more to come: in video content, ringtones and bundling: albums, tracks, concert tickets, video, merchandise, game ... you name it". So, that's nice.

FIRE AT AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
A fire broke out in a trailer at the US's Austin City Limits Music Festival yesterday. According to website Austin360.com, the blaze seriously injured two people, with others suffering minor injuries. Reportedly caused by a large explosion from two propane tanks, the fire quickly spread to several trailers and forced some artists to abandon their sets at the nearby AT&T Stage as emergency crews rushed to battle the blaze. Thankfully it's now all OK, but kudos to singer-songwriter Pete Yorn for having the balls to go on stage before fire crews had announced the situation to be completely under control. That's dedication.

COXON: BLUR REUNION DEPENDS ON DAMON
With the full Blur reunion now looking certain, Graham Coxon has told NME.com that the only thing now delaying the fab four getting back into the studio is Damon Albarn finding a window in his diary. Coxon said: "Dave, Alex and I are talking. I talk to Alex the most. But there's four individuals in the band. We're all really busy, but there's definitely a week when we're going to record".
Coxon does seem sure that the reunion will happen this time, and as he's the loose cannon that probably means it will. Though when pushed for assurances the full Blur contingent would definitely - 100% for certain - be recording again at some point, Coxon aired some caution, stressing that "anything could happen. An alligator could come out of the Thames and eat the Tate Modern while I'm in it, or a mosquito could come and kill us all".
I take his point, though that would be one very large alligator. I'm going with the mosquito as the more likely scenario. Either that, or Caro CMU will murder Coxon for his incorrect use of "there's" in that first quote there. Actually, that's the most likely scenario.
-------------------------------------------------
FLATMATES OF THE YEAR
Well, this is a bit weird. And good luck to the surrounding residents (and drinkers) of London's Boogaloo Bar, because you're reportedly about to adopt a new resident next week which will mean not one but two of rock's more fabled rabble-rousers will be living in your neighbourhood.
Yep, following a stint in rehab, Pete Doherty is apparently all set to flat share with Pogues singer Shane McGowan who, of course, like Doherty, isn't exactly known for his clean living. The Irish star reportedly invited Pete to stay after learning that he was currently homeless. Hopefully the union will teach the Babyshambles frontman a thing or two about what he might look like in ten years time if he doesn't clean up a little. We'll see I guess.
Elsewhere in Doherty news, Pete has reportedly written a song about occasional friend and fellow junkie Amy Winehouse - especially for her 24th birthday. The Daily Star reports that the lyrics go something like this: "Amy on the mend, all that passion to spend. Like a paper Boadicea in a battle to the end, end, end".
-------------------------------------------------
AMY WINEHOUSE: NEW ALBUM
Clearly Pete's birthday song did the trick, cos Amy Winehouse seems to have perked-up a bit. Well, the latest tabloid reports seem to be on her music, which has to be an improvement from all that stuff about cancelled gigs, falling out of clubs and stints on the stomach pump. Speaking to The Mirror, Amy said: "I'm writing new stuff, and can't wait to be back on tour". Groovy.
But not everyone can let the clearly refreshed Amy be, as former Velvet Underground spoilsport Lou Reed has become the 1,656th official public commentator on the situation chez Winehouse, noting: "I like Amy Winehouse - I hope everything's OK with her". Just let it rest, Lou, she's over it now.
-------------------------------------------------
FIDDY: TRUE TO HIS WORD?
As reported yesterday, Kanye West's 'Graduation' beat 50 Cent's new record 'Curtis' to the number one spot in the UK album charts this weekend, preparing Fiddy for his likely defeat in the all-important American album charts. All-important, of course, because he promised to quit making solo records if he loses the battle for the top of the Billboard chart to Mr West.
And after trying to wriggle his way out of that brash promise last week, it now seems that perhaps he'll go through with his threat to retire. Yesterday the multi-million selling rapper cancelled his entire European tour without explanation, including his scheduled performance at the MOBO awards.
Though, that said, there are reports this morning Fiddy is now claiming the sales stats have been rigged to allow West to win the chart battle, which sounds a little like he's trying to wriggle out of the "I'm going to quit" pledge again. He's quoted as saying: "He's [Kanye] never had a fraction of the sales 50 Cent has. They could have one scan and have it count four times. West's entire career hasn't sold half what I sold on my first album".
-------------------------------------------------
POLITICIAN BROWN ATTACKS BONO
No, not that Brown, this Brown. Ian Brown. And always one to speak his mind, the former Stone Rose has once again been spreading his political wisdom, suggesting that Bono and Bob Geldof should be hit with a restraining order for their hi-jacking of the G8 Summit. He also laid into Live 8, suggesting all the much hyped make poverty history gig did was help sell more Pink Floyd albums.
All arguably fair points, though I'm not sure Brown was being too serious in his political discussions with The Guardian, unless he really things that Taliban fighters should patrol inner city areas at night, that lambs should be allowed to graze on the (grass free?) roof of Buckingham Palace and that dolphins should advise governments on crisis planning. Or perhaps he does.
He did seem to get a little serious on the issue of global warming - "America won't accept that there is global warming. It's not good enough. We can't all perish because of their blindness. We need to ban all air-freighted food: carrots from Holland; potatoes from Egypt - it's got to stop" - while on more energy efficient forms of transport, he observed: "The chicken-shit powered car will only do 60 mph but so what? Leave your house a bit earlier". He has a point you know. Especially about the dolphins.
-------------------------------------------------
MADONNA THE AMBASSADOR
No word on Brown's opinions on Madonna's latest peace efforts. I'm guessing he won't be too impressed. But yes, Madonna has become involved in Middle Eastern peace talks with Israeli President Shimon Peres whilst on her trip to the Holy Land to celebrate the Jewish New Year. A Presidential spokesperson said: "The pop star pledged to use her songs to promote peace, and the two toasted the Jewish New Year". Ah, all those centuries of war and diplomacy, and it turns out all we needed was some Madonna songs. Sorted.
-------------------------------------------------
HYNDE SAVES THE ANIMALS
Former Pretender Chrissie Hynde has opened a restaurant called VegiTerranean (see what she did there?) in Akron, Ohio. The singer performed a gig to celebrate both its opening and to raise money for a local theatre on Saturday, during which she declared: "Save animals and stop all the violence". Hynde is, of course, a vehement protestor against animal cruelty, being famously arrested a few years back for campaigning outside a Gap store (she didn't like their leather goods). Her new venture promises the same ethics minus the arrests, which is usually a good thing.

SAY ANYTHING ABOUT EMO
Say Anything's new album looks set to be the emo tour de force of the year, with the band having roped in My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carraba, Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day and Alkaline Trio for their forthcoming release, 'In Defense Of The Genre', which is presumably a knowing reference to the stigma against the whole emo thing, not least in the good old Daily Mail who once warned its readers of an "emo cult" and offered a description of how to spot "an emo" - that being someone with "dyed black hair brushed over" their face, who listens to Green Day and My Chemical Romance, and who converses in sighs, poetry and, erm, wailing. So, Way's involvement in the 'Defense' is especially apt.
The clearly dangerous tracklisting looks like this:
Disc one:
Skinny, Mean Man
No Soul
That Is Why
Surgically Removing The Tracking Device
This Is Fucking Ecstasy
The Church Channel
Shiksa (Girlfriend)
Baby Girl, I'm A Blur
Retarded In Love
People Like You Are Why People Like Me Ecist
Died A Jew
An Insult To The Dead
Sorry, Dudes. My Bad
Disc two:
Spay Me
In Defense Of The Genre
The Truth Is, You Should Lie With Me
The Word You Wield
Vexed
About Falling
You're The Wanker If Anyone Is
Spores
We Killed It
Have At Thee!
Hangover Song
Goodbye Young Tutor, You've Now Outgrown Me
I Used To Have A Heart
Plea

THE CULT: BORN INTO THIS
The Cult have announced details of a new album, the band's first since 2001's reunion affair, 'Beyond Good And Evil'. The new long-player is called 'Born Into This' and is due in early October, with singer Ian Astbury telling Billboard.com what to expect: "Our last record, with all respect to [producer] Bob Rock, we were guilty as charged as much as he was, it was an overproduced record. We just went too far with it. It took about a year and a half and an exorbitant amount of money. This one was far more economic. We didn't want to get entrenched in debates of whether this is working or is this not working. If anything got a little bit drawn out, we just moved onto the next track".
The new album is also the band's first since drummer Matt Sorum left to join Velvet Revolver and this is something that Astbury claims also massively influenced the record, adding that it allowed them to go in a direction that Sorum may have previously refused to let them move in: "Matt's a very grand figure, and a very theatrical figure. He's a big guy and he holds a lot of space". However, despite saying all that, Astbury - perhaps wary of scaring off older fans - did conclude: "It's a real, true Cult record".
-------------------------------------------------
SPIRITUALIZED NEW ALBUM
Jason Pierce has completed the new Spiritualized album and announced that it will be released in early 2008. The first since 2003, Pierce has therefore - by my maths - had five years to complete this work, meaning expectations are as ever are high. Those wishing to get a sneak preview of what Pierce is describing as a record that is "the work of the devil...with a little guidance from me" should head to the Union Chapel on 9 Dec where he's promising to play some of it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CREAM
Legendary clubbing institution Cream is set to celebrate its fifteenth birthday in style with a big partay at Nation in Liverpool on Saturday 20 Oct. Headlining the night is DJ Armin Van Buuren, while also on show will be some of the Radio 1 crew, including Pete Tong, and David Guetta is also scheduled to pop in to spin a song or two.
For those wanting to celebrate the superclub hey days, tickets are available now from http://www.cream.co.uk. Though if a big night out is just too tiring these days, you can always stay in and catch the Radio 1 'playback' on 27 Oct.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Billboard's Woman of the Year title has been handed to the multi-million selling American country music star Reba McEntire. The new award is intended to commend the most influential, hardworking women within the industry, particularly those that have inspired or encouraged other women to become increasingly involved within it. Billboard Group Editorial Director Tamara Conniff commented: "Reba is an inspiration to women everywhere and we are delighted to be presented her with this award". While McEntire seemed appropriately delighted, saying: "I am thrilled to be selected as Woman of the Year by Billboard....I am touched to be embraced in such a warm way".

HADOUKEN! SINGLE RELEASE
Indie-grime noise pot Hadouken! have announced plans to release their next single by USB memory stick, presumably in an effort to garner a load more column inches (look, it worked) rather than, as the press release tells me, make a "knowing nod to this new generation". It's not a totally new concept, of course, but the release is kind of newsworthy because, as previously reported, a USB stick release is now chart eligible. I'm still not convinced it's a format that will last all that long, but if you're still impressed by the novelty value of it all, well, pick up 'Not Here To Please You Mixtape' on USB stick from 12 Nov.

COLUMBIA ANNOUNCE INDIE RETAILER NETWORK
SonyBMG's Columbia Label Group has announced a new initiative that will see the major working "far more closely" with 50 key indie record stores, or what they call "50 key indie tastemaker retailer accounts". The participating stores will receive upfront promos, special point of sale gubbins, and access to press advertising and instore appearances.
Announcing the new initiative, called Columbia Connects, the label's MD Mike Smith told CMU: "It's a reflection of how important we feel the indies are and the part they have to play in our future. This is our way of highlighting the key stores who help us break acts and upping the stakes a little in terms of the commitment we're showing them. At a time of great pressure on the industry it's right we should be re-asserting our support to stores who play a massive role in helping break new acts".
Artists to be initially promoted through the new network include Coheed & Cambria, the Dykeenies, and the Editors.
-------------------------------------------------
SONYBMG APPOINTMENTS
Staying with Columbia for a moment, the major also announced yesterday that they have appointed Nick Huggett, formerly of XL Recordings, to the job of Head Of A&R. Here's what that Mike Smith fella says about that: "I'm delighted to bring Nick to Columbia. I've long admired his taste and approach to the business. He's a very dynamic and versatile, A&R man who operates with great passion and these are qualities essential to Columbia's A&R strategy".
And elsewhere in SonyBMG appointment news, over at the RCA Label Group news that Nick Bray, formerly of Polydor, has joined RCA as Director Of Promotions. Here's what RCA chief Craig Logan has to say: "I'm delighted that we've been able to persuade Nick to rejoin the company and the RCA label. He's an excellent professional with a great track record of success. He knows and understands our company and artists and will be a huge asset for us".
-------------------------------------------------
PWL CATALOGUE FOR SALE
Surely we're due a Stock, Aiken and Waterman revival? No? Well, on the off chance such a revival is in the offing, you could do worse than owning the catalogue of Pete Waterman's own record company PWL. And the good news is that Waterman is selling the PWL catalogue. Bad news, it's being valued at £8 million, which I'm guessing puts it out of the reach of most CMU readers. Anyone wanting to bid should get in touch with the Edge Group who are administering the sale. It's thought at least one of the majors may bid. But I don't think the sale includes PWL's latest signings - The Shelias - you know, the women off that Shelia's Wheels car insurance ad, which, frankly, is why I'm not going to bid.
-------------------------------------------------
WARNER BUY INTO JAPANESE ARTIST AGENCY
Warner Music Japan is the latest major label division to diversify through acquisition by buying a 70% stake in Tokyo based 'artists services' company Taisuke, a cross sector music firm who have operations in the management, recorded music and copyright administration domains.
The deal was confirmed by the company's founder, Taisuke Morimoto, who told reporters: "This is an opportunity for both Warner Music and Taisuke to build business together and to benefit our artists through the use of new business models in the Japanese marketplace". According to Billboard, Morimoto will continue to head the company, working closely with WMJ President Takashi Yoshida.
Confirming the deal from his side, Yoshida said in a statement yesterday: "This is an important strategic investment for us as we continue to transform our business and expand the range of services we can offer. Not only does this enable us to form broader partnerships with our artists, bringing someone of Mr Morimoto's calibre on board also strengthens our expertise in areas we plan to develop further, such as live performance, ticketing, merchandise and endorsement".
-------------------------------------------------
CONCORDE CLOSES ITS DOORS
Long established UK based artist agency Concorde International Artistes has ceased trading, although a number of the people working for the agency at closure plan to continue working in their respective areas through their own new companies.
Concorde began life as a standard artist agency, but later moved into other domains including tour accounting and production and event management and promotion. Over thirty years it worked with a wide range of artists, including Lemar, Nirvana, The Prodigy, Jamiroquai and Westlife.
It is not entirely clear why Concorde closed its doors, but one of its managers, Debra Downes, yesterday confirmed the company formally closed on 1 Sep, while also announcing the launch of her own new company, Dawson Breed Music, which will launch on 1 Oct.
Music Week quote Debra as saying, regards herself and her former colleagues: "On a positive note, everybody is moving in to other things".
-------------------------------------------------
EPITAPH WITHDRAWS FROM EMUSIC IN US
Epitaph are the latest indie label to end its relationship with independent download platform eMusic. Like a handful of other indies, including Victory Records, Epitaph are reportedly unhappy with eMusic's pricing system which means that tracks bought by those on a higher level eMusic subscription package go for substantially less than the standard 99 cents per track price point established by iTunes.
eMusic chief David Pakman confirmed the Epitaph catalogue would disappear from his download platform in his blog, writing: "The much-admired Epitaph record label - including the Anti and Hellcat labels - has chosen to no longer sell their catalogue on eMusic in the US". But he again set out the case for the eMusic pricing model, explaining: "At a time when the music industry is in such steep decline, our research and experience shows us that consumers are still willing to buy music, provided the value is right. And 99-cents a song is not an acceptable price point for all consumers".
-------------------------------------------------
VIRGIN RADIO FLOTATION DELAYED
The planned flotation of Virgin Radio is now unlikely to happen this year. Plans by parent company SMG to take the radio station public were dealt a blow when CEO Paul Jackson announced he was jumping ship to GCap at the end of last month. That, coupled with current uncertainty in the markets, means that SMG is unlikely to stage any flotation until 2008. As previously reported, SMG hopes to sell Virgin Radio to help reduce debts and to enable the company to focus on its Scottish TV business. As also previously reported, rumour still has it one buyer might step in and acquire the whole of Virgin Radio before any flotation. Chatterers say Global Radio, the company that recently acquired Chrysalis Radio, is a current favourite to take over the station, although chatterers also say that all interested parties so far are not willing to pay anywhere near the £105 million SMG reckon the station is worth, making a flotation more likely, albeit a delayed flotation.
-------------------------------------------------
XFM SOUTH WALES RECRUIT
Xfm have announced two new recruits who will help launch its previously reported new South Wales outpost - both formerly of Kerrang! Radio. Mike Newman will become Programme Controller while Emma Newman (yep, same surname, not a misprint) will be the station's Music Scheduler. More appointments - including marketing and events people - are expected to be announced shortly.
Confirming Mike and Emma's appointment, Xfm Network MD Nick Davidson told CMU: "We are really looking forward to welcoming Mike and Emma to South Wales and the Xfm stable - they are two really strong additions to our programming team. They will be working closely with Xfm's Network Programming Director Ande Macpherson and Xfm's Head Of Music Mike Walsh to ensure that the station sounds really fresh and exciting when it hits the airwaves of South Wales later in the year".
-------------------------------------------------
INDIE LOVE
Some rather sweet rumours are flying about suggesting that Simon Klaxon is set to propose to girlfriend and CSS lead singer Lovefoxx. Apparently the Mercury Prize winner told the tabs: "There are lots of wedding bells at the moment," before explaining the main reason for their union: "I especially love her catsuits - they are strewn all over our flat at the moment".
-------------------------------------------------
BRITNEY WATCH: UPDATE
OK, this is all getting rather tedious now, so we'll make this a short update.
First, Britney got chucked out of a fancy restaurant in the US last week for apparently smearing food all over her face and shouting erratically.
Second, it's looking more likely that Britters may lose custody of her two kids after widespread reports that her ex-husband K-Fed will use a 'secret witness' - believed to be Spears' former bodyguard, probably Tony Barretto - who apparently has "dramatic" evidence against the star in the custody battle. That said, if it is Barretto, he failed to give any evidence to the LA hearing on the custody dispute, despite showing up to the court house earlier this week. It's not clear why he was never called.
Third, artist manager Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm, who had recently taken Britney on as a client, has reportedly terminated her contract following that much reported shoddy VMA performance.
And finally - and perhaps most shockingly - Entertainment Tonight has claimed that the FBI is looking into the possibility that a contract is out on K-Fed, proving that the world of Britney never fails to get weirder. There, short and sweet.
-------------------------------------------------
GROHL'S PENS SONGS FOR COURTNEY
It's been assumed that Dave Grohl has alluded to Courtney Love in his songs before, normally whenever an unnamed female is seemingly dissed, but now the former Nirvana drummer has actually admitted there's a Love reference on one of the tracks on his new album 'Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace'. Well, sort of.
He's told the Guardian that the track 'Let It Die' "may" have been written about Love's relationship with Kurt Cobain. In particular, the lyrics: "A simple man and his blushing bride/intravenous, intertwined" - which Grohl admits are probably about the couple. He adds that, given just how angry he gets about Courtney sometimes, it's inevitable she'll appear in his lyrics, even if he doesn't intend her to be there.
