A.Human’s mix of pulsing synths, groovy bass lines and razor sharp guitars provide the perfect back for vocalist Dave Human’s psycho-monologues, which tackle such universal topics as women with knives for hands and men with deer heads.
Ahead of their appearance at the CMU Social in May in May, the band get down and answer the Qs. |
Q1 How did you start out making music?
Someone wrote once that A.Human started making music after being visited in a dream by Mike Oldfield. He was wearing a pair of marigolds and humming Tubular Bells. In his left hand he had a scone and in the other a lobster. They all had that dream on that same night, so it can't be a coincidence. The next morning they had keyboards for hands and trumpets for mouths. Someone else wrote that the truth is they recorded their first track on a bit of a weekend jaunt. We must have done something right!
Q2 What inspired your latest single?
The single [‘Black Moon’] is based on a true story and is in no way fabricated. In fact the whole album [‘The Third Hand Prophecy’] is one big story, so it's all inspired by one big thing, it’s like a big story.
Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. This relaxes the mind. After that we pull music from every different nook and cranny, keyboards, computers, drums, bass, cats, dogs and all over in general.
Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Talking Heads, Soft Cell, Fad Gadget, Television, The Cars, Pulp, The Smiths, Sisters Of Mercy, Victoria Wood, rock, pop, country, gabba and loads of stuff. We love all music. It’s like making a mud cake. Tudor harp music doesn't feature that much, we thought we best leaving that to Sting. Maybe the second album, though. If we get one.
Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Relax and repose. It may be difficult at first but with time it may make a bit more sense. Like a magic eye.
Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest single, and for the future?
We plan to start our own food chain called ‘Easy A?’. As life is getting busier and busier, people have less time to eat. We intend on installing food pipes throughout the country. By installing these pipes into walls and lampposts, people will find a quick and easy way to fill up. By Installing a handy 'Glug Hole' (TM) you simply place the pipe in the said hole and release the tap. Thus filling the body full of food quickly and easily. Job done and off to the gym or the bingo. Obviously A.Human’s music will be playing from all the filling posts. We just want enough money to wear a brand new white t-shirt everyday like gangster wrappers, with slightly more meagre frames. Oh, and we obviously hope the single goes well, we wont be able to fund the above otherwise.
