Cazals

Cazals, a London based band, are signed on the French Kitsune label, an exceptional feat for a guitar band. It is also this very exceptionalism that the Cazals wish to cultivate in an attempt to distance themselves from other trendy Hoxton bands and establish themselves as true forward thinking musicians. And right they are to do so. Their latest album, released 26 May on Kitsune, provides proof for their claims.

Martin, producer and bassist for the band, has answered our same six questions.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
I wanted to start a band with some friends when I was ten or eleven. Obviously drums and guitar were chosen first but to my friends amusement, I actually wanted to play bass. I think maybe my ear has always been attracted to lower frequencies. I can remember lying on the floor in front of my dad's speakers when I was a little boy, listening to 'The Longest Time' by Billy Joel and loving the sensation of the bass and the feeling of the counterpoint with the melody and everything.

Q2 What inspired your latest single?
Lyrically I interpret it as a story of someone yet to find love, consoling themselves with the age old adage "there's someone out there for you". Musically, it's been inspired by a mix of Mike Chapman, The Cars, underwater movie scenes, chiptunes, the resources available at the studio and the chemistry between the five Cazals.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
Music and lyrics can come in any order or at the same time, then rehearsal/development, pre-production and recording. Voila!

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
All of them, ever. But some in a negative way and some in a positive. As for positive influences, personally I'd say Francis Bacon, Igor Stravinsky, Paul Jackson, YMO, Nile Rodgers, Morton Feldman, Daft Punk, The Strokes, Jack and Alexander Kittel, Stanley Kubrick, John Carpenter, Delia Derbyshire, John Baker, Rob Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, Neil Loughran, Frank Strazzeri, Joy Division, Gustav Holst, Krystof Penderecki, Thorsten Klose, Slipknot, Metallica, Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Mrs. Fawcett, Vaughan Phelps, this list could go on forever...

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Nothing.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest single, and for the future?
I'll just be happy to keep learning and making more music. No plans to take over the world.
