Minuit

Hailing from New Zealand, where they are a household name, Minuit are causing quite a stir on this side of the world, too. Their indie-friendly breakbeat songs are happy to get feet moving anywhere, whether it be a dance club, indie night or a gig.

The band’s first album to be internationally released album ‘I Went To This Party And There Were 88 Guards With Guns’ (or ’88 Guards’ for short!) features the best tracks from their early releases. And, let me assure you, there are plenty to choose from. Ahead of a UK tour to promote it, the band’s Paul Dodge answers the Qs.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
Ruth was our drummer 'til we fired up the samplers and put her out of a job. So, she started singing, which shows the best ideas don’t always get planned.

Q2 What inspired your latest single?
Boys with aubergine hair! The album is our favourite picks from our releases in New Zealand [‘The 88’, ‘Guns EP’ and ‘The Guards Themselves’], hence the album name.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
It feels like a track can get created in 15 minutes, if that. Ryan and I come up with some beats, a simple idea, we give that to Ruth who puts some words and tune to it, and she gives it back to us – that moment right there, that’s my favourite bit; when the beats become a song and you hear the raw energy that’s the guts of what it can be. But then that song can take months or even years to actually get finished, ha!

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Anything that moves us. Music that puts chills up your spine gets a replay.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
For Minuit you need to hear it AND see it to truly get it! We had this dude at a gig the other day say, "I've even got your album at home, but i didn’t expect the gig to be like that - that was some rock n roll right there!"

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest single, and for the future?
That the band will put some chills up some spines!
