You must know Mr. Scruff. Everyone knows Mr. Scruff. His catchy tunes, accompanying cartoons and slight obsession with tea have been bringing smiles to the faces of many for more than ten years. And his mammoth DJ sets are the talk of club town.
Mr. Scruff’s latest release is the single ‘Donkey Ride’, a collaboration with Quantic. To celebrate, the man himself sat down and answered the Qs

Q1 How did you start out making music?
I started out in the mid '80s, using bits of old hi-fi equipment, Casio keyboards, a Boss drum machine & tape editing to make crude loops, layering up tracks with tape bounces.
Q2 What inspired your latest single/album?
The latest single was the product of myself, Quantic & our engineer/musician Andy Kingslow having slightly too much fun in the studio.
Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
I generally start with some sort of loop, either music or drums, and then chuck some ideas in. After a bit of jamming, sort out the wheat from the chaff, and get arranging! Then we have a brew. Then mix it down. Then have another brew.
Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Millions! I am a DJ, so I am constantly inspired by a lot of music, both old & new. A few examples... Sun Ra, Pete Rock, Smith & Mighty, Leroy Burgess, Scientist.
Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Get the kettle on!
Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest single, and for the future?
Let's see what happens... Hopefully, the single will inspire people to take up an activity, such as gardening, sport, or perhaps use the local library. If that doesn't work, I will release another single, and then another, until sales of badminton rackets, trowels & onion seeds have at least doubled.
