We first got into Sportsday Megaphone, aka Hugh Frost, proper at Bestival 2007, where his quirky laptop meets guitar meets jumping about a lot live set really stood out as one of our highlights of the weekend.
Now signed to Bestival's sister label, Sunday Best, we await his debut long player with considerable anticipation. Bring on the laptops, guitars and jumping about a lot, that's what we say.
Before the LP arrives, we got Frost to answer those same six questions... |
Q1 How did you start out making music?
I used to be in a screamy/shouty band called The Leftbehinds, but we broke up when it was time for university. I went to study Graphic Design in Brighton and was trying to make artwork for musicians, but didn't know any, so I made up a load of names for fake bands to make sleeves for. Eventually I decided to take it full circle and make the music for the fake bands. Sportsday Megaphone was one of my favourites, so it stuck.
Q2 What inspired your upcoming album?
The Colour Spectrum, Young Lust, Los Angeles, Elephant & Castle, Sushi, Walkie Talkies, George, Casio, Brighton, Particle Physics, Joy Of Knowledge books.
Q3 What process do you go through in creating an album?
Well this is my first one, so I'm not sure of an exact formula yet. I really can't say, the last year is all a bit of a blur. I remember coming up with a few of the words in the shower or walking around, then trying to fit them to bits of music I'd made in Garageband. Most of the lyrics are very much tied into specific times and particularly places.
Q4 Which artists influence your work?
I'm not sure. I'd like to really specific but I think everything I've ever heard has mostly filtered in to my head and been subconsciously filed and exerts it's influence if I sit down to write something. Surely it's impossible to avoid? Nic Nell is the only person I could name as influencing me, but that's because we're friends (doing something similar) and we have a way of pushing each other forward. He influences me in that sense. Not vocally though, I leave the falsetto stuff to him... and R Kelly.
Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the
first time?
That's a really hard question! I have no idea.
Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album/single, and for the
future?
We still haven't decided which of the tracks will be the proper singles or even the final name for the album (it was going to be called 'Made Of Shapes', but then Kate Nash released 'Made Of Bricks' and now Hot Chip have 'Made In The Dark', so maybe not), but I really hope people feel it works well as a first collection of songs. I guess my biggest ambition is for the album to provide the opportunity to tour with other bands I love. If that works out, I'll be super happy.
